Word Study Resources 

Brainstorming :

In this activity, students brainstorm other words that have the features they are studying that week. The students may find the words in printed material, or they may simply think of the words themselves. Students record their brainstormed words in their Word Study


Students write good, detailed sentences using words from their weekly sort. Students should write these sentences in their Word Study Journals. This provides them an opportunity to practice using the words in context

Closed Sort:

Students sort their words by feature using the labeled mat as a guide/reminder of the week's features. Writing Sort: Students write their weekly words in groups, sorted by their features. This work may be done either in the Word Study Journal or on the mat.

Spelling City:

This interactive website offers award-winning game-based learning for vocabulary, spelling, phonics, writing, and language arts. Students have their own log-in and password.
