The goal of the Enrichment Program at Ho-Ho-Kus is to provide students with challenging curricula where they can engage in authentic learning experiences.  Every student is assessed each year to determine his/her eligibility for enrichment identification. This process involves analyzing multiple measures for all grade levels. 


The program is structured according to grade bands: specific to K-2, 3-5 and 6-8. A push in and a pull out model are implemented. Throughout the K-8 span, instructional modifications in terms of content, product, process, and learning environments are provided. The program provides opportunities for real-life experiences that offer varied perspectives.                                         


In grades K-2, the enrichment teacher, in collaboration with classroom teachers, develops and implements whole class lessons and STEM challenges to all students.  These grade level projects inspire students to use their creativity and problem-solving skills, while providing students opportunities to collaborate and build communication skills with peers. Additionally, the enrichment teacher serves as a teacher-facilitator to infuse  differentiation techniques within the general education classroom.  As a result, every K-2 child participates in enrichment experiences throughout the year. 

*For the 2020-2021 school year, the enrichment teacher is creatively planning ways in which students can collaborate during their synchronous and asynchronous learning time while keeping the objectives for the lessons/units aligned with the NAGC Pre-K-Grade 12 Gifted Programming Standards.*


The Enrichment Program for grades 3-8 focuses on exploring disciplines and real-world problems. Both local and global problems are analyzed to foster an empathetic perspective in which students have the ability to generate positive change. Students engage in design-loop challenges, breakouts, evidence assessments, and logic puzzles in an effort to strengthen their questioning, creativity, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills. Students examine the philosophical role of ethics, truth, identity, and perception. Students engage with both current events and classic texts. When applicable, students participate in academic competitions, such as Bergen Brain Busters, American Mathematics Competitions (MAA AMC), and Battle of the Books. The 3-8 program utilizes both a push in and a pull out model. Students are pulled out to work with the enrichment teacher and their identified peers on units that foster creative growth. This allows for students to gain opportunities to interact with others of diverse gifts, talents, abilities, and strengths. The enrichment teacher also pushes into the content area courses to assist in differentiating the district's units of study to meet the needs of the identified students.

*For the 2020-2021 school year, the enrichment teachers are utilizing a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning environments with the identified students.* 


As we critically and carefully examine each student's needs, there have been occasions where a student is given 1:1 instruction in a content area when his/her abilities far surpass the grade level standards.


Ho-Ho-Kus will continue to review and analyze the optimal way to provide students across the district with enrichment experiences.
