Grade 2 - Comprehension

We are closely studying characters and their traits  by "stepping in" and "stepping out" to see how characters react to challenges and events in their lives.   Students will become aware that when a character reacts differently, they can predict that something very important may be happening.  Books that  provide great opportunities for character studies are Zelda & Ivy, Mr. Putter & Tabby, Houndsley & Catina.  Strong characters provide opportunities for students to relate to their own lives.

Grade 3 - Fluency

Passage- "The Snowperson" - read using fluency skills 2-3 times each night.

Grade 3 - Reading

Our unit is non-fiction which introduces students not only  to the features of this genre, but also to their structures.  We are learning to identify the structure  (i.e., cause & effect, description, compare & contrast) by looking for specific words that writers use to help us  understand more fully.  This unit provides students with an opportunity to learn higher domain vocabulary.  What strategies can we use to when we come to unknown words?  We continue to annotate to keep track of our thinking which provides opportunities to stop and make meaning as they are reading.
