Science Class Expectations

Welcome to 7th  and 8th grade science!

We are looking forward to a wonderful year together with you! We know that this year will be like no other, and science class will be structured a little differently than you may be used to. Please know that your teachers are here to guide you along the way. Please feel free to reach out at any time with any questions or concerns.

Remember, for our hybrid learning model:

Some suggestions for academic success this year:

  • When working at home, engage with the same expectations as in an academic setting

    • Find a quiet, focused work space

    • Use earbuds or headphones to eliminate distractions from family members and/or pets

  • Take responsibility for any missed work by contacting the teacher and/or checking Google Classroom

  • Check emails and Google Classroom daily

  • If you need extra help or support, please reach out to your teacher

Your Science grade will be based on several forms of assessment: tests and quizzes,  labs and investigations, design challenges, projects, homework, and class participation. As we begin the year, we will not be able to engage in some types of group work, and will therefore address our concepts through investigations and labs individually, virtually, or through teacher demonstrations.

  • Homework and assignments: If homework is assigned on a particular day,  it will be due by 8:15am the following day. However, you may also have some long term assignments to work on over a few days. Therefore, it is very important to stay organized, and plan out your time to complete assignments.

    • Grades will be lowered for late work.

      • One day late: 10 point deduction

      • Two days late: 20 point deduction

      • Three days late: Half-credit only

      • After the third day: Zero

    •  When students are absent, it is their responsibility to find out about missing assignments.  They should check google classroom and/or check in with the teacher after an absence.

  • Assessments:  Formal assessments will be completed during the synchronous instruction time. They will be announced several days in advance. There will also be informal assessments such as responses to questions or graded assignments during synchronous or asynchronous instruction time. Therefore, it is very important to keep up with all assignments, maintain an organized “binder” of notes, and review content material presented in class. Students should be reviewing even if no “formal” homework is assigned for a particular night.

  • Participation: You will be graded on your participation, so it is important that you are prepared with all required materials and ready to participate in class every day.  This includes active engagement and the following of all procedures and safety rules during both synchronous and asynchronous time.  Participation grade will be lowered if unprepared for class.

For academic success in our class, you need to have the following supplies with you every day:

  • A charged Chromebook

  • Assignment planner

  • Binder and/or 2-pocket folder with loose leaf paper

  • ruler (6-inch or 12-inch)

  • earbuds

  • Pens, pencils, highlighter
